Mindful Eating

Eating mindfully has been the most powerful tool I have witnessed as a health and nutrition life coach. It’s not only about what you eat but how you eat as well. The practice of mindful eating has three main components these are eating according to your body’s needs and the capability of regulating your food choices. It is one of the building blocks in the practice of a health and nutrition coach on wellbeing. In today’s lesson, we will be evaluating ways to include mindfulness into your everyday eating pattern, which will hopefully lead you towards a more mindful, conscious, and fulfilling health and nutrition journey. Mindful eating puts an emphasis on bringing awareness and making your eating experience mindful. It involves eating slowly, savouring your food and listening to your body. The mission is to help develop a more healthy and nutritious life of yours by training you to enjoy the joys and benefits of eating nutritious foods.

Before You Eat:

i) Check your hunger: Before getting hold of food, think if you are really hungry. At other times, we eat out of boredom, stress, or habit. Being attentive to your body’s messages is the first thing to do when you go into mindful eating.

ii) Plan your meals: Planning is an essential part of food consumption, which means that your meals are not accidental and not by chance. For every health and nutrition life coach, it’s a top strategy.

iii) Mindful grocery shopping: When shopping, be sure to select fresh and whole foods. Be there, and let your thoughts go to the ways these foods will boost your nutritional status and help you meet your fitness targets.

iv) Gratitude: Pause before mealtime to voice your appreciation for your food. This is done in order for you to treat food as a gift to your body and as an essential ingredient of your health.

During Your Meal:

i) Create a calm environment: Distractions should be reduced to set the focus on your meal. Enjoying your meal in a quiet environment helps you to be more mindful of what you eat.

ii) Engage your senses: The colours, textures and aromas of your food must be your focus. It accomplishes both, i.e., encourage eating slowly as well as make eating more enjoyable.

iii) Chew thoroughly: Chewing food properly helps in digestion and in taking pleasure from each bite, making you more aware of your internal cues that say you have had enough to eat.

iv) Put your fork down between bites: This easy habit will allow you to slow down your pace of eating, thus eating mindfully and eventually realising that you are full.

v) Listen to your body: Be always paying attention to your body’s signs of fullness and satisfaction. Maintaining a mindful relationship with food implies stopping at the point when you are pleasantly full, as opposed to overeating.

After Your Meal:

i) Reflect on your experience: Spare a few minutes and reflect on that meal, the happiness it spread and how you felt after the feast. This allows you to examine and become conscious of what you are eating.

ii) Practice gratitude again: Using expressions of gratitude at the end of your meal sustains a positive relationship between food and eating.

iii) Avoid distractions: Once you eat, spend a few more minutes in peace before you get into another task or project. This is good for digestion and also helps to keep a sense of calm and wellbeing throughout your day.

Mindful eating is a journey that does not end in one day. It’s about growing into an awareness that brings great meaning to your meal rather than treating it as a basic impulse.
